Even a short-term absence for Bieber is a brutal blow for the Indians, who are six games over .500 but also five and a half games back of the trắng Sox for the division lead. The timing of the move is rather poor for the Brewers, who’ve been enjoying a highly productive stretch at the plate from the Gold Glove second baseman. Since returning from that first IL stint, Wong had raked at a .303./.342/.486 video with four homers, a dozen doubles, a triple và four stolen bases through 152 plate appearances.
With Wong shelved for a yet-to-be-determined period of time, the bulk of the innings at second base will fall to lớn recently displaced shortstop Luis Urias. He throws a 95+ mph heater and a slider with about equal frequency, but didn’t draw a stand-out number of swinging strikes (just over ten percent) in the majors last year. He was hammered in his 22 debut innings, surrendering 19 earned runs with a 24:17 K/BB ratio. But Markel was much better in the upper minors last year, throwing 41 1/3 innings of 1.74 ERA ball with a hefty 16.3 K/9 against 5.7 BB/9.
In Surkamp, the Rangers will acquire some depth for an injury-ravaged rotation. Texas currently has Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Colby Lewis on the disabled list, with Lewis in particular facing a lengthy absence (two months). The 28-year-old Surkamp made nine starts for Oakland this season but struggled for much of the year & ultimately recorded a 6.98 ERA over 38 2/3 innings. However, he’s posted a strong 3.07 ERA with 10.4 K/9 against 3.1 BB/9 through five Triple-A starts this season & has long shown the ability to succeed at the top minor league level. In 293 1/3 frames in his career at Triple-A, Surkamp has a 3.56 ERA và a strong 274-to-82 K/BB ratio. The Rangers will hope that he’s able lớn tap into some of that success if he’s needed at the big league level, và if not, he’ll serve as a useful rotation piece for a Triple-A rotation that is currently depleted due to injuries in the Majors.

Feliz, 27, was one of four players the Pirates acquired in the 2017 trade that sent Gerrit Cole lớn Houston. Feliz posted a 3.99 ERA for the Pirates through 56 1/3 innings in 2019 — his best season in the big leagues lớn date. However, he was hampered by shoulder và forearm issues during his time in Pittsburgh, & his fastball was averaging a career-low 94.1 mph through 7 2/3 innings in 2021. He still posted an above-average 27.7 percent strikeout rate in Pittsburgh, but his walk rate rose a bit (to 10.6 percent) và Feliz was also quite homer-prone, serving up 18 long balls in 113 1/3 frames.
Overall, Feliz has pitched 234 1/3 innings in the Majors and has only a 5.07 ERA to lớn show for it. Fielding-independent marks are more bullish on the righty (4.01 FIP, 3.31 SIERA), so the Reds will hope that a change of scenery will help him get on track and tap into the potential that once made him one of the Astros’ most promising farmhands. Feliz is out of minor league options, so he’ll immediately join the Reds’ bullpen & try to lớn sort things out at the MLB level.
The 27-year-old Romano showed some promise as a rookie back in 2017, when he logged a 4.45 ERA through 16 starts (87 innings). He’s struggled through every big league opportunity he’s had since that time, working to a collective 5.48 ERA through 184 frames with a well below-average strikeout rate (16.3 percent) and roughly average marks in terms of grounder and walk rates (44.4 percent và 8.6 percent, respectively).
Like Feliz, Romano is out of options, meaning any club that claims him or acquires him in a trade would have to carry him on the big league roster. The Reds will have a week to see if there’s a team interested in acquiring him or to try khổng lồ pass him through outright waivers.
The oft-injured Hill has dealt with blisters in the past and missed time with the issue after joining the Dodgers in năm 2016 as well. Despite his frequent injuries & questionable durability, Hill’s elite performance since improbably resurfacing in the Majors late in the 2015 season prompted the Dodgers to lớn ink him to a three-year, $48MM contract this offseason. Soularie, 20, had a huge freshman season with San Jacinto College in Texas before transferring to the University of Tennessee and posting similarly impressive sophomore numbers. In his two seasons with the Tennessee program (2019 and this year’s shortened 2020 campaign), the outfielder batted a combined .336/.448/.586 with 16 homers, 14 doubles, a triple và 10 steals in 311 plate appearances. The Cards initially drafted Soularie after his 2018 showing with San Jacinto, but not until the 29th round, so his decision not to sign at that point will pay substantial dividends. Soularie’s No. 59 slot comes with a $1.19MM slot value.

Now 31 years old, La Stella was a capable part-time player with the Braves and Cubs from 2014-18, but he has found another gear since joining the Angels before last season. Going back khổng lồ 2019, La Stella has slashed .289/.353/.483 (125 wRC+) with 20 trang chủ runs & as many walks as strikeouts (35). However, in addition khổng lồ his prospect pedigree & youth, Barreto owns a strong track record in Triple-A, where he has hit .285/.356/.505 with 53 HRs in 1,285 PA. The Angels are obviously hoping Barreto will tap into his potential in their uniform, but because he’s out of minor league options, they won’t have the luxury of demoting him without possibly losing him.
Defensively, most of Barreto’s MLB playing time has come at second, where La Stella và Luis Rengifo have gotten the lion’s chia sẻ of action for the club this year. But as the Angels go through the final month of what’s very likely to lớn be another non-playoff season, they should be in position lớn evaluate Barreto as a possible everyday option at the keystone. The A’s, on the other hand, are taking a chance that La Stella will provide yet another weapon on a team aiming for an AL West title and a World Series this year.

ESPN’s Keith Law rated Rutherford as the No. 6 prospect in the draft, while Callis & Jonathan Mayo ranked him eighth at MLB.com & Baseball America rated him ninth overall. Scouting reports on Rutherford praise his hit tool & potential for above-average power nguồn in a corner outfield spot. All three of the reports referenced here note that some scouts are a bit down on Rutherford because he’s already 19 years old, meaning he offers a bit less projection than the typical high school pick, and he’s yet to lớn fully tap into his power potential.
Certainly, those concerns didn’t seem lớn exist within the Yankees’ front office, & they’ll land a talent that many pundits felt should’ve been off the board by the time they selected. The Yankees added in their announcement that they’ve now signed all of their picks from the top 10 rounds of the draft, meaning the vast majority of their work on the draft front is in the books. Perhaps the Tampa bay club preferred to carry some added defensive versatility; no doubt the fact that they’ll face several lefty starters in the next week was also a factor. The presence of starter/first bagger Brendan McKay on the roster also reduces the need for a lefty bat.
In any event, there’s no indication that Choi will be sidelined for a lengthy stint. He’s slashing a respectable .266/.351/.423 on the season, good for a 111 wRC+. With Choi only commanding league-average money, he’s a cost-efficient player, but it’s certainly possible the club will see cause to pursue an upgrade at some point this summer.
The 27-year-old former first-round pick (No. 10 overall, 2011) debuted with the Friars back in 2014 and has spent parts of the past five seasons in the San Diego infield mix. However, after a mostly promising start to lớn his career — .274/.330/.408, 107 OPS+ in 410 plate appearances from 2014-15 — Spangenberg’s bat has fallen off. He’s batted .251/.312/.384 (88 OPS+) through 868 big league PAs from 2016-18. The 2018 season, in particular, was tough on Spangenberg, as his OBP dipped below .300 and his strikeout rate soared to 32.8 percent.
Spangenberg has more than 1000 innings of MLB experience at both second base và third base, though he hasn’t graded out as a plus defender at either. Both Defensive Runs Saved & Ultimate Zone Rating peg him as roughly a scratch defender at second but a below-average third baseman.
The left-handed-hitting Spangenberg has been a solid bat against right-handed pitching throughout his career (.271/.331/.423), and paired with his respectable glovework at second base, he could at the very least function as a useful platoon piece in that role. Spangenberg won’t turn 28 until next March, though, so it’s certainly not out of the question that a change of scenery could help him tap into the potential he demonstrated earlier in his career. Any team that signs Spangenberg could control him through the 2020 season if he’s able to bounce back next year, as he’d remain arbitration-eligible next winter.
Peterson, who’ll turn 24 this coming Monday, received an exceptionally brief promotion khổng lồ the Majors this season, making just two plate appearances before being sent back to lớn Triple-A Gwinnett. A second-round pick of the Padres back in the 2013 draft, he joined the Braves organization alongside Max Fried, Jace Peterson & Mallex Smith in the 2014 Justin Upton blockbuster.
A former third baseman, Peterson moved khổng lồ the outfield on a full-time basis back in 2015. He’s appeared at all three spots in the time since, though he’s best suited for corner work và has spent the bulk of his time in left field over the past two seasons. Peterson doesn’t strike out at an alarming rate (career 22 percent in Triple-A) but also isn’t overly proficient in terms of drawing walks (7.2 percent in Triple-A). He’s hit for a decent average but shown more gap power nguồn than over-the-fence pop in the upper minors, as evidenced by a .260/.321/.368 slash with a dozen homers and 40 doubles in 788 plate appearances.
While some scouting reports have previously pegged Peterson for average to slightly above-average raw power, he’s yet to tap into that in the upper levels of the Braves’ system. That said, he still ranked 15th among Braves farmhands on the latest midseason update from Jim Callis & Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, so it’s a bit surprising khổng lồ see him change hands on a mere waiver claim. Peterson has a pair of minor league options left beyond the current season, so the Tigers can afford khổng lồ be patient with him in the future, should he stick on the 40-man roster into the 2019 season.
Cincinnati has rampantly slashed payroll this winter, non-tendering Archie Bradley and Curt Casali despite modest arbitration projections & dumping Raisel Iglesias’ $9.125MM salary in a giảm giá khuyến mãi with the Angels. General manager Nick Krall has spoken of reallocating those resources, but lớn this point the club has yet lớn put that money back into the roster. The Indians also acquired another MLB-ready option at shortstop in Andres Gimenez, who at this point is more highly regarded than Rosario.

Still just 25 years old, Rosario was once regarded as one of MLB’s best overall prospects, but he’s yet lớn display much of that potential in the big leagues. He had a roughly league-average year at the plate in 2019 when he hit .287/.323/.432 with 15 homers và 19 steals, but his offense cratered in 2020. Overall, he’s a .268/.302/.403 hitter (89 wRC+) in more than 1500 big league plate appearances. Rosario was at one point considered an eventual plus defender, but lớn this point in his career he’s been 21 outs below average, per Statcast’s OAA mark, and has turned in a Defensive Runs Saved mark of -35 in 3306 innings.
