Clarkin, 24 in February, was the No. 33 pick by the Yankees in the 2013 draft but went from the Yanks khổng lồ the Sox in the 2017 David Robertson/Tommy Kahnle swap. The 2018 season was an ugly one for Clarkin, however, as he was hit hard in 68 Double-A innings. In 18 appearances (10 starts) at that cấp độ he posted a 4.98 ERA và averaged just 4.6 K/9 against 4.1 BB/9. The Cubs have a general need for left-handed depth in the bullpen & will look lớn tap into the potential that made Clarkin a first-rounder earlier this decade. It’s far from a guarantee that he’ll stick on their 40-man roster for the remainder of the winter, but if h does, he’ll be an optionable piece for the Cubs in 2019.

Even a short-term absence for Bieber is a brutal blow for the Indians, who are six games over .500 but also five and a half games back of the trắng Sox for the division lead. The Indians are also currently without righty Zach Plesac due to a fractured thumb, leaving Aaron Civale as the most established option in their ailing rotation.

Cleveland has also given looks khổng lồ youngsters Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, Logan Allen, Sam Hentges and Jean Carlos Mejia so far in 2021. No one from that grouping has proven himself to be a reliable option just yet, but the Indians will nevertheless need khổng lồ tap further into that depth with Bieber on the shelf.

It’s been another strong season for Bieber, albeit one that’s not quite on par with last year’s utter dominance in a Cy Young-winning effort. Bieber leads the Major Leagues with 90 2/3 innings pitched, và he’s worked lớn a 3.28 ERA with a 33.9 percent strikeout rate that ranks seventh in the Majors.

It’s the second oblique strain of the season for Wong, who figures to be looking at an absence of some note. Wong & manager Craig Counsell told reporters Friday that the injury occurred in the exact same spot as the left oblique strain he suffered in April (Twitter link via Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel). As such, the club is going to be more cautious khổng lồ ensure that the injury is fully healed, which likely indicates Wong will miss more time than the two weeks he missed with that first strain.

The timing of the move is rather poor for the Brewers, who’ve been enjoying a highly productive stretch at the plate from the Gold Glove second baseman. Since returning from that first IL stint, Wong had raked at a .303./.342/.486 video with four homers, a dozen doubles, a triple và four stolen bases through 152 plate appearances.

With Wong shelved for a yet-to-be-determined period of time, the bulk of the innings at second base will fall to lớn recently displaced shortstop Luis Urias. The 24-year-old former đứng top prospect opened the year getting regular reps at short, but defensive shortcomings prompted the Brewers lớn swing a trade for Willy Adames. With Wong now on the shelf, Urias will slide down the defensive spectrum and look to tap into his considerable offensive potential while playing a position more suited to lớn his abilities. He’s swinging a good bat at the moment, having homered in consecutive games and batted .303/.361/.636 over his past 12 contests.

Tsutsugo, 29, was a prominent slugger with the Yokohama DeNa BayStars in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, batting .285/.382/.528 in parts of 10 seasons — including a .293/.402/.574 slash with 139 trang chủ runs in the four years leading up khổng lồ his không tính tiền agency.

He struggled in 2020 with the Rays but at least showed off some of that power, slugging eight long balls, five doubles and a triple in 185 trips to lớn the plate last summer. That power has completely evaporated in 2021, however, as Tsutsugo has just four doubles & no trang chủ runs through his first 87 plate appearances.

Overall, Tsutsugo has come to the plate 272 times as a member of the Rays and managed only a .187/.292/.336 batting line with a 28.3 percent strikeout rate. Lớn his credit, he’s walked at a hearty 12.5 percent clip, but that keen eye hasn’t helped him to lớn tap into the obvious power that helped make him a star in Japan. With Ji-Man Choi nearing a return from the injured list và Tsutsugo’s struggles persisting, Marc Topkin of the Tampa cất cánh Times wrote yesterday that a touch decision on Tsutsugo seemed virtually “inevitable.”

It’s unlikely that the Rays will find a taker for Tsutsugo’s salary — he’s still owed $5.46MM through season’s kết thúc — though they could always try khổng lồ orchestrate some kind of swap involving another bad contract. Such giao dịch are tough to lớn put together in a short window during the season, making it likelier that he’ll be placed on waivers or simply released.

The Halos will try lớn tap into the upside of Quijada, who got quite a few swings in his 2019 debut despite relying heavily upon his fastball. He also coughed up 26 walks, 19 earned runs, và 10 home runs in his first 29 2/3 MLB frames. Over seventy career Triple-A innings, Quijada carries a 3.73 ERA with 11.2 K/9 against 4.4 BB/9.

Markel also debuted in 2019, though he’s already 29 years of age. He throws a 95+ mph heater and a slider with about equal frequency, but didn’t draw a stand-out number of swinging strikes (just over ten percent) in the majors last year. He was hammered in his 22 debut innings, surrendering 19 earned runs with a 24:17 K/BB ratio. But Markel was much better in the upper minors last year, throwing 41 1/3 innings of 1.74 ERA ball with a hefty 16.3 K/9 against 5.7 BB/9.

In Surkamp, the Rangers will acquire some depth for an injury-ravaged rotation. Texas currently has Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Colby Lewis on the disabled list, with Lewis in particular facing a lengthy absence (two months). The 28-year-old Surkamp made nine starts for Oakland this season but struggled for much of the year & ultimately recorded a 6.98 ERA over 38 2/3 innings. However, he’s posted a strong 3.07 ERA with 10.4 K/9 against 3.1 BB/9 through five Triple-A starts this season & has long shown the ability to succeed at the top minor league level. In 293 1/3 frames in his career at Triple-A, Surkamp has a 3.56 ERA và a strong 274-to-82 K/BB ratio. The Rangers will hope that he’s able lớn tap into some of that success if he’s needed at the big league level, và if not, he’ll serve as a useful rotation piece for a Triple-A rotation that is currently depleted due to injuries in the Majors.

More on other sidelined players from around the majors…

Feliz, 27, was one of four players the Pirates acquired in the 2017 trade that sent Gerrit Cole lớn Houston. He came to lớn the Bucs with a heater that averaged better than 96 mph và a 33.8 percent strikeout rate compiled between the 2016-17 seasons. Those numbers have all taken a step back since the trade.

Feliz posted a 3.99 ERA for the Pirates through 56 1/3 innings in 2019 — his best season in the big leagues lớn date. However, he was hampered by shoulder và forearm issues during his time in Pittsburgh, & his fastball was averaging a career-low 94.1 mph through 7 2/3 innings in 2021. He still posted an above-average 27.7 percent strikeout rate in Pittsburgh, but his walk rate rose a bit (to 10.6 percent) và Feliz was also quite homer-prone, serving up 18 long balls in 113 1/3 frames.

Overall, Feliz has pitched 234 1/3 innings in the Majors and has only a 5.07 ERA to lớn show for it. Fielding-independent marks are more bullish on the righty (4.01 FIP, 3.31 SIERA), so the Reds will hope that a change of scenery will help him get on track and tap into the potential that once made him one of the Astros’ most promising farmhands. Feliz is out of minor league options, so he’ll immediately join the Reds’ bullpen & try to lớn sort things out at the MLB level.

The 27-year-old Romano showed some promise as a rookie back in 2017, when he logged a 4.45 ERA through 16 starts (87 innings). He’s struggled through every big league opportunity he’s had since that time, working to a collective 5.48 ERA through 184 frames with a well below-average strikeout rate (16.3 percent) and roughly average marks in terms of grounder and walk rates (44.4 percent và 8.6 percent, respectively).

Like Feliz, Romano is out of options, meaning any club that claims him or acquires him in a trade would have to carry him on the big league roster. The Reds will have a week to see if there’s a team interested in acquiring him or to try khổng lồ pass him through outright waivers.

The oft-injured Hill has dealt with blisters in the past and missed time with the issue after joining the Dodgers in năm 2016 as well. Despite his frequent injuries & questionable durability, Hill’s elite performance since improbably resurfacing in the Majors late in the 2015 season prompted the Dodgers to lớn ink him to a three-year, $48MM contract this offseason. Hill is only a week into that sizable contract, but he’s already demonstrated both the upside & frustration that come along with that deal. The 37-year-old tossed five innings of one-run ball with five punchouts in his season debut, và while outings of that caliber figure khổng lồ be frequent when healthy, today’s news is yet another reminder that he’s long stood out as an injury risk.

The shortened 10-day term of the disabled danh mục in the 2017 season makes it easier for the Dodgers to lớn briefly shelve the left-hander và tap into their considerable minor league pitching depth, however. Fields will give skipper Dave Roberts another arm khổng lồ help compensate for the hopefully abbreviated loss of Hill. The Dodgers have an off-day next Tuesday, as well, which could help them lớn manage their rotation in Hill’s absence. Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times tweets that pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said that Alex Wood could get a spot start in Hill’s place next Monday. McCullough also tweets that Roberts said lefty Julio Urias won’t be considered for next Monday’s outing, despite being slated lớn start in Triple-A that day.

Soularie, 20, had a huge freshman season with San Jacinto College in Texas before transferring to the University of Tennessee and posting similarly impressive sophomore numbers. In his two seasons with the Tennessee program (2019 and this year’s shortened 2020 campaign), the outfielder batted a combined .336/.448/.586 with 16 homers, 14 doubles, a triple và 10 steals in 311 plate appearances. The Cards initially drafted Soularie after his 2018 showing with San Jacinto, but not until the 29th round, so his decision not to sign at that point will pay substantial dividends. Soularie’s No. 59 slot comes with a $1.19MM slot value.

MLB.com’s Jim Callis tweets that Soularie’s bonus will kiểm tra in at $900K, which falls a bit shy of his No. 59 overall slot’s $1.185MM value. Pre-draft rankings on Soularie ranged from 105th overall at MLB.com khổng lồ 175th at Baseball America & 193rd at FanGraphs. He’s touted for his hit tool & what is currently an all-fields, line-drive approach. MLB.com’s report on him suggests that he could eventually tap into 20-homer power, though, và Eric Longenhagen at FanGraphs noted that Soularie has “some similarities to lớn Khris Davis.”

Raya, meanwhile, was a Texas Tech commit who ranked 238th on Longenhagen’s list và 291st at BA. Both reports on him chú ý that he has an above-average slider & a heater that reaches the mid-90s, with praising his ability khổng lồ spin not only a slider but also a potentially above-average curveball. Raya is just 6’0″ & 160 pounds, so some scouts surely questioned his size.

9:15pm: The Athletics have acquired infielder Tommy La Stella from the division-rival Angels, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Fellow infielder Franklin Barreto is headed lớn the Angels, per Rosenthal.

*

Now 31 years old, La Stella was a capable part-time player with the Braves and Cubs from 2014-18, but he has found another gear since joining the Angels before last season. Going back khổng lồ 2019, La Stella has slashed .289/.353/.483 (125 wRC+) with 20 trang chủ runs & as many walks as strikeouts (35). La Stella even earned his first All-Star nod a season ago, though he was unable to play in the trò chơi after suffering a fractured tibia.

To his credit, La Stella has come back strong from his injury this year. He could soon emerge as the No. 1 option at second base for a contending Oakland club that has relied on Tony Kemp to handle the position so far.

Although La Stella was terrific as an Angel, they’re well out of contention, và he’s a pending không tính tiền agent. As such, it made sense for the club khổng lồ move on from La Stella và take on the 24-year-old Barreto, a former đứng đầu prospect who didn’t receive consistent playing in Oakland.

Originally acquired from the blue Jays as part of the two teams’ Josh Donaldson trade before 2015, Barreto batted a woeful .180/.210/.360 with nine homers in 219 plate appearances as an Athletic, and he has totaled just 10 trips khổng lồ the plate this year. However, in addition khổng lồ his prospect pedigree & youth, Barreto owns a strong track record in Triple-A, where he has hit .285/.356/.505 with 53 HRs in 1,285 PA. The Angels are obviously hoping Barreto will tap into his potential in their uniform, but because he’s out of minor league options, they won’t have the luxury of demoting him without possibly losing him.

Defensively, most of Barreto’s MLB playing time has come at second, where La Stella và Luis Rengifo have gotten the lion’s chia sẻ of action for the club this year. But as the Angels go through the final month of what’s very likely to lớn be another non-playoff season, they should be in position lớn evaluate Barreto as a possible everyday option at the keystone. The A’s, on the other hand, are taking a chance that La Stella will provide yet another weapon on a team aiming for an AL West title and a World Series this year.

An over-slot giảm giá figured lớn be a requirement for the high school outfielder out of Chaminade Prep in California, however, as he slipped down the draft board a bit from where some earlier projections had him landing. ESPN’s Keith Law rated Rutherford as the No. 6 prospect in the draft, while Callis & Jonathan Mayo ranked him eighth at MLB.com & Baseball America rated him ninth overall. Scouting reports on Rutherford praise his hit tool & potential for above-average power nguồn in a corner outfield spot. All three of the reports referenced here note that some scouts are a bit down on Rutherford because he’s already 19 years old, meaning he offers a bit less projection than the typical high school pick, and he’s yet to lớn fully tap into his power potential.

Certainly, those concerns didn’t seem lớn exist within the Yankees’ front office, & they’ll land a talent that many pundits felt should’ve been off the board by the time they selected. The Yankees added in their announcement that they’ve now signed all of their picks from the top 10 rounds of the draft, meaning the vast majority of their work on the draft front is in the books. Thành phố new york went considerably over slot on Rutherford and third-rounder Nolan Martinez, but the Yanks saved a good giảm giá of money on picks five through 10, including four straight $10K signings of college seniors to lớn close out rounds seven through 10 (as can be seen in the draft trackers at MLB.com and Baseball America).

Yankees fans seeking to learn a bit more about their club’s đứng đầu pick can check out a Q&A that MLBTR contributor Chuck Wasserstrom conducted with the highly touted Rutherford back in late April.

Rondon, 25, has seen kích hoạt in three MLB seasons but tallied just 289 career plate appearances. The majority of those have come this season, but he’s limped to lớn a .197/.265/.282 line in 2019. A light-hitting utilityman, Rondon did slug 18 trang chủ runs in 2018 with Chicago’s International League affiliate, but that power outburst was unprecedented & he hasn’t managed to lớn follow up on it this year. Given his age và reputation as an above-average defensive infielder, perhaps he’ll draw some interest league-wide, but any claiming team would have khổng lồ keep him on its active roster, since he’s out-of-options. It seems likely he’ll clear waivers và return to Triple-A Charlotte.

Jimenez spent the minimum ten days on the IL with a right elbow contusion. The former vị trí cao nhất prospect hasn’t amazed in his rookie season, but his .244/.307/.483 line is more-than-adequate for a 22 year-old. The prodigious power nguồn hitter has popped 17 home runs on the year & still projects as a focal point of the club’s rebuild, even if he’ll need to lớn refine his plate approach to lớn tap into all of his immense offensive upside.

Infielder Mike Brosseau will come up to lớn take the mở cửa active roster spot. He’s in the majors for the second time this season after a brief prior promotion. Brosseau has been aflame at Triple-A, where he carries a .317/.408/.590 batting line with 15 trang chủ runs & a 51:33 K/BB ratio.

It’s at least a bit interesting khổng lồ see the Rays tap Brosseau rather than first base prospect Nate Lowe. The left-handed-hitting Lowe struggled in a ten-game stint earlier this year, but would seem lớn be a more direct replacement for Choi. Perhaps the Tampa bay club preferred to carry some added defensive versatility; no doubt the fact that they’ll face several lefty starters in the next week was also a factor. The presence of starter/first bagger Brendan McKay on the roster also reduces the need for a lefty bat.

In any event, there’s no indication that Choi will be sidelined for a lengthy stint. He’s slashing a respectable .266/.351/.423 on the season, good for a 111 wRC+. With Choi only commanding league-average money, he’s a cost-efficient player, but it’s certainly possible the club will see cause to pursue an upgrade at some point this summer.

The 27-year-old former first-round pick (No. 10 overall, 2011) debuted with the Friars back in 2014 and has spent parts of the past five seasons in the San Diego infield mix. However, after a mostly promising start to lớn his career — .274/.330/.408, 107 OPS+ in 410 plate appearances from 2014-15 — Spangenberg’s bat has fallen off. He’s batted .251/.312/.384 (88 OPS+) through 868 big league PAs from 2016-18. The 2018 season, in particular, was tough on Spangenberg, as his OBP dipped below .300 and his strikeout rate soared to 32.8 percent.

Spangenberg has more than 1000 innings of MLB experience at both second base và third base, though he hasn’t graded out as a plus defender at either. Both Defensive Runs Saved & Ultimate Zone Rating peg him as roughly a scratch defender at second but a below-average third baseman.

The left-handed-hitting Spangenberg has been a solid bat against right-handed pitching throughout his career (.271/.331/.423), and paired with his respectable glovework at second base, he could at the very least function as a useful platoon piece in that role. Spangenberg won’t turn 28 until next March, though, so it’s certainly not out of the question that a change of scenery could help him tap into the potential he demonstrated earlier in his career. Any team that signs Spangenberg could control him through the 2020 season if he’s able to bounce back next year, as he’d remain arbitration-eligible next winter.

Peterson, who’ll turn 24 this coming Monday, received an exceptionally brief promotion khổng lồ the Majors this season, making just two plate appearances before being sent back to lớn Triple-A Gwinnett. A second-round pick of the Padres back in the 2013 draft, he joined the Braves organization alongside Max Fried, Jace Peterson & Mallex Smith in the 2014 Justin Upton blockbuster.

A former third baseman, Peterson moved khổng lồ the outfield on a full-time basis back in 2015. He’s appeared at all three spots in the time since, though he’s best suited for corner work và has spent the bulk of his time in left field over the past two seasons. Peterson doesn’t strike out at an alarming rate (career 22 percent in Triple-A) but also isn’t overly proficient in terms of drawing walks (7.2 percent in Triple-A). He’s hit for a decent average but shown more gap power nguồn than over-the-fence pop in the upper minors, as evidenced by a .260/.321/.368 slash with a dozen homers and 40 doubles in 788 plate appearances.

While some scouting reports have previously pegged Peterson for average to slightly above-average raw power, he’s yet to tap into that in the upper levels of the Braves’ system. That said, he still ranked 15th among Braves farmhands on the latest midseason update from Jim Callis & Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, so it’s a bit surprising khổng lồ see him change hands on a mere waiver claim. Peterson has a pair of minor league options left beyond the current season, so the Tigers can afford khổng lồ be patient with him in the future, should he stick on the 40-man roster into the 2019 season.

Cincinnati has rampantly slashed payroll this winter, non-tendering Archie Bradley and Curt Casali despite modest arbitration projections & dumping Raisel Iglesias’ $9.125MM salary in a giảm giá khuyến mãi with the Angels. General manager Nick Krall has spoken of reallocating those resources, but lớn this point the club has yet lớn put that money back into the roster. Acquiring Rosario, who is owed just $2.4MM after avoiding arbitration earlier in the winter, would represent the team’s only addition to lớn the payroll this offseason.

Puma reported last night that the Indians were receiving trade interest in Rosario, which likely caught some fans off guard given that Rosario was one of the pieces Cleveland received from the Mets in their Francisco Lindor/Carlos Carrasco blockbuster. However, Cleveland has also been slashing payroll this winter — and doing so on an even more extreme level. The Indians also acquired another MLB-ready option at shortstop in Andres Gimenez, who at this point is more highly regarded than Rosario.

It stands khổng lồ reason that Cleveland could simply have acquired Rosario with an mở cửa mind — exploring the trade market for him but also content to carry him into the season. If he were to lớn be flipped lớn another club, whatever players come back khổng lồ Cleveland in return could in many ways be considered an extension of the franchise’s return for Lindor and Carrasco.

Still just 25 years old, Rosario was once regarded as one of MLB’s best overall prospects, but he’s yet lớn display much of that potential in the big leagues. He had a roughly league-average year at the plate in 2019 when he hit .287/.323/.432 with 15 homers và 19 steals, but his offense cratered in 2020. Overall, he’s a .268/.302/.403 hitter (89 wRC+) in more than 1500 big league plate appearances. Rosario was at one point considered an eventual plus defender, but lớn this point in his career he’s been 21 outs below average, per Statcast’s OAA mark, and has turned in a Defensive Runs Saved mark of -35 in 3306 innings.

Rosario is still young và controlled all the way through the 2023 season, so perhaps the Reds or another interested tiệc ngọt believe they can help him tap into the ability that at one point led to lớn Rosario ranking as a consensus vị trí cao nhất 10 prospect in all of baseball.

Andrei Svechnikov, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Filip Zadina, Brady Tkachuk & others will all hear their names selected in the first few picks, but in which order is still to lớn be determined. The Montreal Canadiens are holding everyone in suspense with their decision with the third-overall pick, while anyone from 6-10 could easily trade up or down.
